It is no surprise that sugar has constantly been categorized as an unhealthy source of food. Numerous studies have tied sugar intake to health conditions such as obesity and type two diabetes. Despite these studies, sugar, especially in beverages like soda, is still being consumed at a large rate.

THURSDAY, Aug. 1 (HealthDay News) -- The ongoing outbreak of stomach illness linked to the cyclospora parasite has now spread to 15 states and New York City, with 378 cases reported, according to the latest U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report issued Wednesday.

The source or sources of the nationwide outbreak has not yet been located, although health officials at two of the hardest-hit states, Iowa and Nebraska, say they have traced local outbreaks to an as-yet-unnamed salad mix.

Post Acute Partners, a New York City-based health-care services company with operations in four states, has completed its acquisition of Elderwood Senior Care.

The senior care company, which was owned by the Chur family, includes nine skilled-nursing facilities, six assisted-living residences, two independent living communities and an institutional pharmacy.

Obama will discuss the economic benefits of the new health care law, spokesman Jay Carney said, a day after New York state reported that it expects private health insurance rates to drop by more than half because of the legislation.

Home Health Eligibility Improperly Restricted in 11 States: OIG

Areportfrom the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services finds that 11 states have improper restrictions on eligibility requirements for Medicaid home health benefits by requiring them to be homebound.

The OIG report, sent on July 1 to Marilyn Tavenner, the administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), evaluated states’ eligibility requirements for Medicaid Mandatory Home Health Services.

Senior Citizens Building Approved

Plan for three-story apartment building for senior citizens is approved by Parma Planning Commission

PARMAA plan to build a three-story apartment building for independent senior citizens was approved by the Planning Commission June 26.

However, the plan will need five zoning variances before it can go forward. The Board of Zoning Appeals will consider the proposed variances July 9.

Commission members and Councilwoman Mary Buchholz Galinas expressed concerns about the senior apartments but overall they reacted positively.
